How to Cleanse your Face...

Now, this might sound pretty basic, but you’d be surprised how many people do this incorrectly.

Cleansing is such a crucial part of any skincare regime. If you don’t prep your complexion correctly, the rest of your routine will be ineffective. A bit like building a house without foundations…not a good idea!

So, here is my quick guide on how to cleanse your skin properly...

Morning Cleanse

Providing you completed your skincare routine the night before, this should be quite straightforward. Use a gentle cleanser in the morning. By gentle, I mean a product that doesn’t contain any acid or exfoliation, it’s usually a gel, milk or cream texture. The cleanser should be applied to slightly damp skin and lightly massaged into your complexion using circular motions. Remove it with lukewarm water ensuring it’s never too hot or too cold.

Evening Cleanse

When you wash your face in the evening it’ll require a double cleanse, even if you haven’t been wearing makeup. You’ll also need the help of a trusty flannel or face cloth. I highly recommend you have at least 8 of these. One for each day of the week and another for ‘laundry day’. The flannel will pull makeup and debris from your pores effectively and help to prevent them becoming clogged and causing breakouts.

The first cleanse will follow exactly the same instructions as the morning one. The only difference is you’ll use a lukewarm flannel to remove the product. You may also find an oil‐based cleanser helpful if you’ve been wearing a lot of foundation, powder etc. They’re slightly too heavy in the morning but are great at melting away makeup at night.

For the second cleanse you have a couple of options. You could simply repeat the above routine or, add in a treatment cleanser instead. My advice is to use a treatment cleanser every other night.

A treatment cleanser usually contains a small amount of acid such as Glycolic, Salicylic or Lactic. They’re designed to exfoliate your complexion, clear your pores and buff away dead skin cells. To use, massage them gently into your skin (avoiding the eye area, as it’ll sting!), leave for 1‐2 minutes and then remove with your lukewarm flannel.

In my opinion this is the optimal cleansing routine and creates the perfect canvas for the rest of your regime.

Let me know how you get on and if you notice a difference in your complexion! Any questions, please get in touch and I will be happy to assist :)
