How to Apply your Skincare Products

The application of your skincare products should bring you great joy, however sometimes these sequences can be a little baffling. Do we apply eye cream before moisturiser? SPF after serum? Here is my go‐to guide to banish skincare confusion and ensure it’s a heavenly ritual.

Step 1. CLEANSE

We have a whole post on the power of double cleansing here. This is always the first step in your routine to ensure a clean, even canvas to work with.

Step 2. TONE

Now I don’t work with toners very often, but if you choose to use one, this is where it’d go. Sometimes I add in a hydrating mist, a spritz of rosewater or an acidic toner for an extra boost.

FOR THE RETINOL USERS – This is the stage you’d apply your Retinol at night time. Once applied to the skin, leave it for a minimum of 20 minutes to absorb before continuing your routine.

Step 3. SERUMS

Serums are applied next due to their molecular structure. They are lighter in consistency and therefore are absorbed much better when applied to a fresh face. If you have multiple serums in your routine, work from thinnest to thickest in texture, starting with your Hyaluronic Acid first.

Step 4. EYE CREAM

This one often causes confusion! Much like serums, these lotions are thin and must be clear of barriers to work effectively. Apply using your ring finger and gently pat around the orbital bone.

Step 5: MOISTURISE

Moisturisers are emollients and help to lock all the goodness into your complexion. There are many different kinds designed for various skin types and conditions. Massage it in using upward motions.

Step 6: OIL

This again is an additional product that I use as and when needed. Oil is one of few products that is able to penetrate your moisturiser, the same cannot be said when the two products are applied in the opposite order. Unless your skin is very, very dry, I’d advise only using this product in the evening.

Step 7: SPF

This non‐negotiable step is always the last skincare product applied to your face in the morning. If you apply it straight after cleansing, it’ll prevent the absorption of all other products. Always use it last to ensure everything works to its full potential and that your skin is completely protected.

These are the guidelines for your everyday skincare routines. Once you’ve got the technique down, it should be a lovely, relaxing experience and a proper dose of well deserved selfcare. As usual, if you’ve got any questions, or would like some help putting your routine in order, please just shout!
