Aesthetics can be a confusing field to navigate and one of the most common questions I get asked is, ‘What is the difference between Advanced Skin Treatments (Micro Needling, Skin Peels) and Injectable Treatments (Botox, Fillers)?’.
To begin with, it’s important to clarify that these remedies target ageing complexions in very different ways. Botox targets the muscles of the face whilst Micro Needling and Skin Peels target the skin itself.
As we age the muscles in our face weaken. Injectable treatments such as Botox can be used to temporarily paralyse the muscles by blocking the nerve signals to them. Filler is used under the soft tissue to temporarily fill deep lines and furrows by injecting a form of hyaluronic acid. However, these injectables do very little to benefit the skin.
The skin is our largest organ and produces collagen and elastin fibres which gives our complexion its strength, structure and youthful appearance. Advanced skin treatments such as Micro Needling speed up this natural process by shifting the skins repair mechanism into high gear. This works to minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles long term, whilst helping to prevent new ones from forming.
It certainly isn’t a case of one is better than the other and in fact, both forms of treatment work very well hand in hand. The decision is largely based on personal preference, the severity of your concerns and how well your skin has been cared for up until this point.
