It’s a well-known fact that prevention is better than cure. This is especially true when it comes to our skin.
Did you know that the Sun is responsible for up to 90% of the ageing caused to our complexion?! Although this is a scarily high statistic, we are fortunate that there is a very simple way in which to avoid it…. introducing your new best buddy, the one and only SPF (Sun Protection Factor).
SPF is not a particularly glamorous product; in fact it probably brings back memories of being smothered in a cakey lotion whilst on holiday with your parents and having to wait 30 minutes before you could jump in the pool! Things have since moved on and now these products are easy to apply and work instantly.
In a study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, we can clearly see the damage caused to this truck drivers’ skin through his 28-year career. The side of his face closest to the window is severely photodamaged, there’s been a significant breakdown in collagen and elastin production and the texture has thickened. The opposite side of his face is relatively unharmed.
Windows have the ability to block out UVB rays (the ones that burn), however UVA rays (the ones which age us), can penetrate through the glass. It is almost impossible to avoid UVA rays, according to Skincancer.org, as they make up 95% of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. However, wearing your SPF on a DAILY basis and not just digging it out when you’re off on holiday, will protect against them.
When finding the right SPF for you, ensure you purchase a physical, broad spectrum formula as opposed to a chemical version. Physical, broad spectrum formulas work instantly and reflect the light away from your face so that the rays are not absorbed. Brands such as Dermaquest have a wide variation of SPF products to suit all skin types. Ensure you wear a minimum of SPF 30 and reapply regularly if you’re in direct sunlight. The tinted versions are my personal favourite!
